Explanation for a friend on Facebook went like this:
Lion introduced emoji icons into the special characters window. You can access it via ⌥⌘T in most programs. So I registered a domain with an emoji icon through Tokelau (.tk), because Tokelau allows the registration of unicode characters in their TLD. Emoji icons were registered in Unicode 6.0 as of October 2010, so they got integrated into Lion, etc, etc.
